Max Mavrud: a vineyard worthy of a weekend
Just an hour’s drive from Përmet, the hills and fields of Albania’s southernmost region are quenched by the Vjosa River. A few kilometers from the Greek border, Leskovik is a small city that stretches cinematically between magnificent vineyards, mountains and forests. This is an underrated region that should be on every oenophile’s radar for next year and beyond. Located a few hundred miles from the town, Max Mavrud is a scenic winery that boasts vineyards surrounded by hills. Escape here from the city for long, scenic walks, wildlife spotting and sampling the region’s mavrud.
THE STORY
Majestic mountains, rolling hills and sceneries of uncontaminated nature -Southeastern Albania’s scenic beauty alone is enough to intoxicate anyone. Add some delicious wine to the mix and the result is pure magic. Max Mavrud is a winery and agroturizëm that should be on the radar of every traveler in search of underrated places. The three rooms have superb mountain views. Visitors can enjoy lunch picnics at the estate’s winery and sample some of the best Albanian traditional dishes -byrek, lakrore, fresh vegetables from the garden, local cheeses and butter. If you get tired of sipping blends, head over the idyllic 19th St. Eleni Kostandini Church, once used from believers asking for blessings.
THE COLLECTION
Max Mavrud vineyards are cultivated in mountainous terrains at an altitude of 750 meters above the sea level, with a very suitable position facing the sun. The most common cultivars you can find here are Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pearl -used for raki and brandy- and the indigenous cultivars Debinë and Mavrud. Currently the winery produce one of the best red wine of Albania, a deep-colored and full-bodied red wine that is a combination of red cultivars such as Mavrud and Merlot or Pinot and Merlot with a harmonious blend.
